Reading-

Supporting your child with reading in Year 2

Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.

There are two types of reading book that your child will bring home:

A reading practice book: This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.

A sharing book:  Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.

Reading practice book

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.

Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.

Year 2 children will bring their reading practise book home on either a Thursday or Friday to read over the weekendIt will be signed out by staff to your child and it should always be returned on a Monday morning.

As we are sure you will appreciate the Little Wandle Reading scheme has been a great expense and we only have a limited number of books to be shared across the school. We understand that accidents do happen, and sometimes books are lost, but we need to replace each damaged or lost book. In such circumstances, please inform the Year 2 staff about the name of the book which has been lost/damaged and pay £6.00 to cover the cost of a replacement book.

Each book your child reads throughout their Little Wandle reading journey will be allocated to them as an online resource via Collins eBooks.

Sharing book

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book the children will choose for you to enjoy together and will be sent out along with their reading practise book.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!  The sharing book can be changed by children on any day.

Please take a look at our Curriculum (located in the letters tab on the left of this page) to find out what  we will be learning in all  areas of the curriculum.
